Intro: 00:00

You are listening to Inspired Insider with your host, Dr Jeremy Weisz.

Dr. Jeremy Weisz: 00:22

Doctor Jeremy Weisz here, Founder of inspiredinsider.com, where I talk with inspirational entrepreneurs and leaders today is no different. I have Jeff Bush. You can check him out at BDR.ai. And Jeff, before I formally introduce you, I always like to point out more episodes of the podcast people should check out. You know, this is kind of I was telling Jeff before we hit record here, there’s just certain people, when I hear them talk, I just want to listen to them more and more.

So I probably have spent over six hours listening to Jeff because he is been in the trenches and he’s really has a lot of sound true principles and his advice. And so I’m really excited about this conversation. And this is kind of part of a software series that I do. Okay. Some of the I’ll talk about some of the companies I’ve had on in that space.

And really, when I think, Jeff of you really, I think of direct response. I mean, you are a true direct response expert. And when you send billions of pieces of mail, we’re not talking about email. We’re talking about these costs money. And you test it and you keep testing it and they have to work, or you spend a lot of money and don’t get anything back.

So we will. So I have done a direct response series. So it’s kind of like, okay, we have the software in direct response. So some of the direct response side, and I want to hear some of Jeff’s favorite people in direct response. I had Ron Popeil, if people don’t know who he is.

But wait, there’s more. Just a famous infomercial. King had him on the podcast. I had Brian Kurtz, who also has sent billions of direct mail pieces out and some of the just Jason Fladlien actually expert at again direct response. But in the webinar fashion, he even has went on and taught the Zoom team about webinars.

There’s just so many more. If you search direct response series on inspired insider and on the SaaS side, some interesting ones. The co-founder of Zapier was a good one. I had one of the co-founders of a Weber, a Jotform. He talked about the freemium model and building the millions of users off the freemium model and, and so many more.

And then we’re talking about traction. Gino Wickman was on the podcast, as well as Mark Winters of RocketFuel. Jeff, who are some of your favorite, I don’t know, direct response people or authors?

Jeff Bush: 02:51

Boy, some of the best. I mean, I probably read 20 books. Alan Rosen span, he was around Boston area. I hired him to do a seminar to my sales team. I had 40 sales people that were trying to learn about how to write better copy.

Alan Rosen was a I followed him. Jay Abraham is probably my favorite. Jay Abraham. I talked to him last week. He just went on stage at Tony Robbins and Tony introduces him as the Godfather of marketing.

So his famous book, How to Get All You Can Out of Everything You’ve Got, is just a phenomenal book on on direct response, lead gen finding hidden gems. So Jay’s one of my favorites. Dick Benson wrote some books about direct mail copywriting. Dan Kennedy, another guy, Dan Kennedy, that I followed for a long time. Those are probably some of my, my top four where I learned how to write, copy and influence through writing, whether that be direct mail, email, you know?

Yeah, those are, those are some of my favorites.

Dr. Jeremy Weisz: 03:51

Yeah. For me, the foundation for me of everything is relationships and direct response, right? So, you know those two things. What about from a book standpoint? I know you’re a fan of Gino Wickman and EOS and Traction.

What what other, I don’t know, books or groups that you’ve been a part of over the years?

Jeff Bush: 04:14

Yeah, I mean, I was in Vistage CEO group for like five years and I was a pretty young CEO starting to get bigger as far as headcount. And I come from the sales and marketing side. You know, I dropped out of junior college halfway through. So I, I wasn’t super educated on the college side came from sales and marketing. So I had to learn legal PnL, Balance sheet, you know, lawsuits, HR, I had to learn all that, especially building a big business in California, you know, like, so the Vistage really helped me be a more rounded CEO and learn enough to be dangerous in the parts that I wasn’t good at.

And yeah, I took my company through traction, hired an implementer, built scorecards. That was an amazing growth journey for me because instead of me running around having to do everything, the scorecards held all my managers accountable and they it was almost like peer pressure. You go to the meeting every week and who got done what they said they were going to get done last week. So accountability that was super helpful. Going through Traction.

That’s a great book. RocketFuel. Yeah. So, you know, and then all the sales training and how to manage a sales team of 20 or 40 people at a time. The craziness that goes into that.

So I, you know, I’m an old Zig Ziglar guy, sales, sales management, you know, you know, just learning John Maxwell on leadership, you know, how to be a better leader. So I read a lot of John Maxwell books and gone to a lot of seminars, you know, just to go learn this stuff. You know.

Dr. Jeremy Weisz: 05:48

I used to listen to yeah, the Zig Ziglar audio cassette tapes in my car, the Brian Tracy audio cassette tapes, all those, you know, those big folding things with six cassette tapes. Yeah.
