In this episode…
AI is transforming accounting, but the biggest shift is not just faster software — it is a new way for firms to serve clients, manage capacity, and stay competitive. As demand for bookkeeping rises and accounting talent becomes harder to find, how can firms use automation without sacrificing trust, accuracy, or control?
Enrico Palmerino, a serial entrepreneur and accounting technology innovator, believes AI should help firms scale their expertise rather than replace it. He highlights how Botkeeper evolved from solving his own bookkeeping pain points into a platform that helps accounting firms automate categorizations, reconciliations, journal entries, document workflows, and practice visibility. By moving from direct SMB services to a firm-focused model, Botkeeper gave accountants a way to improve margins, reduce manual work, and support more clients without overloading their teams. Enrico also explains why adoption depends on trust, showing firms that AI can strengthen client service while preserving ownership of the relationship.
In this episode of the Inspired Insider Podcast, Dr. Jeremy Weisz sits down with Enrico Palmerino, Founder and CEO of Botkeeper, to discuss AI, automation, and the shift in accounting firms. Enrico explains Botkeeper’s move from SMBs to firms, how AI improves bookkeeping workflows, and why the Xendoo acquisition accelerated its roadmap. He also shares advice on pricing, profitability, and entrepreneurship.

- Shift toward scalable client service models: Serving firms instead of individual SMBs can improve expansion, reduce churn, and create stronger long-term growth opportunities.
- Encourage broader platform adoption: Applying automation across more clients makes workflow changes more consistent and helps firms realize stronger time savings and ROI.
- Plan for profitability and resilience: Focusing on efficient growth, strong unit economics, and sustainable operations can help businesses withstand sudden market or revenue challenges.

Intro: 00:15
You are listening to Inspired Insider with your host, Dr. Jeremy Weisz.
Dr. Jeremy Weisz: 00:22
Dr. Jeremy Weisz here, Founder of InspiredInsider.com, where I talk with inspirational entrepreneurs leaders today is no different. I have Enrico Palmerino and he is CEO and Founder of Botkeeper. I’m going to formally introduce you in a second. Enrico. I always like to point out other episodes of the podcast people should check out.
Since this is part of the software and AI series, some of the past episodes I had one of the co-founders of Zapier on. That was a really good episode. One of the co-founders of Pipedrive talking about growing the company, and, you know, Enrico, some of the challenges, not just like the high points, but some of the tough, tough times that you get hit with. The founder of Mailshake, which is a cold email platform, how they grew to 70,000 users. And Jotform, that was a great one, on how he created a freemium model and, you know, got to 25 million users on that. So all great interviews. Check out InspiredInsider.com.
This episode is brought to you by Rise25. At Rise25, we help businesses connect to your dream relationships and partnerships. We do that through two ways. One, we’re an easy button for a company to launch and run a podcast. We do the strategy, accountability, and the full execution of production. And number two we’re an easy button for companies gifting. So, you know, we make gifting and staying top of mind. It could be clients, partners, prospects, even staff from a culture perspective. People just send us a list and then we send the gifts out. And Enrico, it’s not, I don’t like sending like mugs or things with logos. I like sending food because I like getting food. So I think sending someone something every 3 to 4 months for five years, and they actually look forward to getting it. And we kind of call ourselves the magic elves that run in the background to help companies build amazing relationships. And for me, over the past decade, I found no better way to profile the people I admire in the podcast and send them sweet treats in the mail. So check out Rise25.com or email [email protected].
I am really excited to introduce Enrico Palmerino. He’s a serial entrepreneur and board member in several tech and financial organizations. As I mentioned, he’s the Founder and CEO of Botkeeper. Botkeeper is an AI-powered accounting automation suite, and it’s used by both accounting firms, small businesses to really automate much of the day to day bookkeeping. You know, Enrico, for me, I didn’t get into business to do bookkeeping. It’s actually something I don’t look forward to, and I lose energy doing it. So it really helps people save time and money while increasing accuracy and speed of processing. They raised over $107 million. They were actually acquired by Xendoo, which is really exciting. And they were doing AI stuff before. I don’t know, it was cool from the mainstream, I guess you could say Enrico, because like we’re talking 2018 now, it’s kind of more commonplace for, you know, people have a ChatGPT account, but back then it wasn’t. So we’ll talk about the evolution of that. And Enrico, thanks for joining me.
Enrico Palmerino: 03:30
Thanks for having me on.
Dr. Jeremy Weisz: 03:31
So there’s really, you have an interesting journey. And I kind of admire that you went to Babson College. I feel like I should have gone to Babson College and I missed out on that. But I do want to start off just with Botkeeper, what you do. And then we’ll talk about the Xendoo acquisition too.
So talk about Botkeeper for a second and what you do.
Enrico Palmerino: 03:52
Yeah. So Botkeeper originated out of a challenge I had. So I had started a lighting business and it took off and our.
Dr. Jeremy Weisz: 04:00
That was Thinklite.
Enrico Palmerino: 04:02
That was Thinklite. Yeah. So our books were always a mess. Like we were throwing crazy money at it and tons of people. And they were just never up to speed. And then we had an issue one time where like there was an entry issue. So what we were showing for cash on hand was off and barely were able to scrape by on payroll. It was super stressful. So when that business got acquired, I was like, well, I’m going to solve that problem for everyone like me who doesn’t like bookkeeping.
Dr. Jeremy Weisz: 04:27
You felt the pain.
Enrico Palmerino: 04:29
I did because it’s one like it’s one thing to save you time and money. It’s another thing to make accurate and good business decisions off of your data. And if the data isn’t accurate or it’s slow, if you’re looking at last month’s data a month late, that’s, you know, you’re not being able to make quick business decisions. So that was, that was the impetus to the foundation. And then, yeah, we were doing AI back in 2015, 2016, way before AI was a buzzword.
Dr. Jeremy Weisz: 04:56
What did AI look like for you then? Did you have like 72 software engineers? Like, what did AI look like?
