In this episode…

Managing business relationships today is a balance between efficiency and authenticity. While automation tools improve workflows, they can also make interactions feel impersonal. How can professionals use technology to grow relationships without losing the human connection?

For Jon Ferrara, a CRM pioneer, building strong business relationships requires shifting away from systems focused only on pipelines and reporting and instead prioritizing tools that support real human connection. He explains that effective relationship management happens when contact records are automatically enriched from sources such as email and LinkedIn, allowing users to focus more on engagement than manual entry. He highlights the importance of making relationship-building accessible to everyone in an organization, not just sales teams. This approach helps businesses stay organized while still being deeply personal in their outreach. He also emphasizes blending AI with intentional human actions to build trust and long-term relationships.

In this episode of the Inspired Insider Podcast, host Dr. Jeremy Weisz sits down with Jon Ferrara, Founder and CEO of Nimble, to discuss building technology that supports authentic relationship management. They explore why most CRMs fail at true connection, how AI can enhance — not replace — personalization, and how Nimble makes relationship-building easier across teams. Jon also shares lessons on service-driven business and personal resilience.

Intro 00:15

You are listening to Inspired Insider with your host, Dr. Jeremy Weisz.

Dr. Jeremy Weisz 00:22

Dr. Jeremy Weisz here. I am the Founder of InspiredInsider.com, where I talk with inspirational entrepreneurs and leaders. Today is no different. I have Jon Ferrara of Nimble. You can check him out at Nimble.com. And Jon, I’m going to formally introduce you in a second, but I always like to point out other episodes of the podcast people should check out, since this is part of the top software series. Some other episodes to check out. I had one of the co-founders of Zapier on the podcast, which was a very good episode. Also, one of the founders of Jotform and Jon was interesting how he talked about growing to 25 million users, and how he used the freemium model with it. That and many more on InspiredInsider.com.

This episode is brought to you by Rise25. At Rise25, we help businesses connect to your dream relationships and partnerships. We do this by giving. And Jon is a big proponent of the thought process, and how do you give as much as humanly possible to someone? And that’s kind of how I come from. And so we help companies launch and run a podcast. We do the strategy, accountability, and full execution production. And we also are an easy button for companies’ gifts. So staying top of mind for clients, partners, prospects, and even staff from a culture perspective, just give us the addresses. We’ll do everything else. And you know, for me, the number one thing in my life is relationships. And that’s why I love what Nimble is all about, actually. And I’m always looking for ways to give to my relationships.

And I found no better way over the past decade to profile the companies and people I most admire and to send them sweet treats in the mail. So check out Rise25.com or email [email protected].

I’m super excited to introduce Jon Ferrara. He’s the Founder and CEO of Nimble, and he’s actually one of the original pioneers of the CRM category. He co-founded GoldMine in the early 90s, which really helped define what contact management software even looked like. After he sold GoldMine, he kind of came back to build Nimble with a really simple but powerful idea that relationships are the engine of every business. And really, the goal of the CRM is to nurture, to help nurture those relationships. So Jon, thanks for joining me.

Jon Ferrara: 02:41

You bet. Jeremy and I, I don’t think I could have said it better. I gotta hire you.

Dr. Jeremy Weisz: 02:47

You just did. But I’m going to pull up the site and just talk about Nimble and what you do. We’ll get into the past and how you came to this. But I think, you know, the way you think about a CRM is different.

Jon Ferrara: 03:02

Yeah. Well, if you really dissect what CRM means, customer relationship management, those words mean a lot of things. It’s basically a database. It’s a database. So you put data in, and you get data out, but the data that you put in are really the most critical contacts that you have in your professional and maybe even personal world. And so CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management. But I think that the M and the R management et the relationships because when I pioneered contact management and CRM, there was no Outlook, there was no Salesforce, there was no tool that integrated email, contact, and calendar for a team, let alone a person. And so I built it because I struggled with managing relationships. And what I wanted to do was to put a wire through all of our daytimers. So a daytimer, a leather-based, paper-based organizing thing for contacts, to-dos, and tasks.

And I wanted to put a wire through the daytimer because everybody in my company touched the constituency around my company. It was an enterprise network operating system called Banyan. And so I wasn’t just touching prospects and customers. I was touching prospects, customers, resellers, and distributors. And it wasn’t just me; it was corporate product management support, shipping. And so I think the mistake most people make is that they buy a CRM to manage prospects and customers. Well, your constituents around your business are much more than prospects and customers, and a typical technology business. Its editors, analysts, bloggers, influencers, third-party developers, investors, and advisors. And how do people manage those today? Spreadsheets. That’s it. Why? Because CRMs aren’t built for relationships. They’re built for command and control and reporting. The reason they call it Salesforce is for salespeople to use it.

And so the reason this is all true is that we pre-dated Outlook. We were out with GoldMine. Microsoft doesn’t innovate. They iterate. They basically copied GoldMine, made Outlook, and became the standard in contact management. So when Siebel and then Salesforce were built, they weren’t thinking about relationships and contacts. They were just thinking about reports on prospects and customers to track what the salesperson is doing and the deals they create. So basically, it’s all about management reporting. So CRM’s built for management. It’s not built for salespeople or engagement. And it’s certainly not built for the whole company. Nimble is a team relationship CRM built for the whole company so that the whole company can share a system record of relationships, but then it has the sales and marketing features that you need for scaling revenue, etc., and it has features for the non-salespeople.

I call these workflows. Basically, it’s a Kanban board that you can define a series of cards and tasks that you put people through processes, and really, processes are what are critical to scaling any business. And so what Nimble is, is the relationship manager with a capital R.

And that’s because it’s designed for everybody in the company to use it. And I think one of the key things I love is that it works for you rather than you working for it. It automatically builds your contact records from your email productivity suite, Microsoft, or Google. We synchronize your email contacts and calendar, and also your LinkedIn contacts. And then we enrich those contacts with people and company data.

So you have to Google people, you Nimble them, and then we work back where you live. You live in your inbox, you live in LinkedIn, you live in a business application. QuickBooks and Nimble have a plugin for Chrome that will automatically bring up a record if it exists, wherever you’re engaging in email, LinkedIn, or whatever. And if it doesn’t exist, you hit a button and Nimble automatically builds a record from the underlying information on your screen. And then you could do the things you need to do the follow-up and follow through, because that’s where we all fail. We just don’t do the basics. And Nimble helps you do the basics because you’re not having to struggle to do the data entry and everything else. So I know that was long-winded.
