The cofounders of the Foundation, Dane Maxwell and Andy Drish, say that they have the Balls to show you the most intimate parts of their business. They back it up in this interview exposing their inner limiting beliefs and much more. The first year of theFoundation they built a list of 15,000 people in less than 3 months and got 336 customers and did over a 7 figure launch.

The Foundation is an online incubator for people who want to build software companies, but may not even have an idea to get started and don’t know how to code. They’re on a mission to help 1,000,000 people get their first customer in business. Listen in the interview when they say…”I f’in hate that mission” and they talk about changing it.
FUN FACT: Andy’s real name is not Andy but Phil. Dane’s fun fact…just watch minute 11 in the video as I do not want to spoil it.

Thank you Andy and Dane. This interview is powerful. You really dug deep and were really revealing. Simply Amazing!
Andy and Dane are the most open entrepreneurs I have seen… Awesome interview jeremy
Hey Lucius thanks for the comment and the compliment. I agree that they were really open which was great. What did you find to be the most helpful part of the interview for you?
I’m building this http://www.snapper.vu after took the foundation last year.
thanks for sharing. what was the most valuable part of the process of the foundation that helped you build snapper? what stuff do you think you need to work most on based on the interview?
I don’t think is only 1 thing that you should take out of the foundation. For me it was a 6 months of mind-blowing content and it was damn good. Some students think that idea extraction process is the most important part, but really, the most important part is allowing yourself to change your own mindset. So, for me, taking the course it was a f**** awesome experience. Believe it or not, but the resource for success are in all of us.
Let me address 3 questions to your audience; how much money did you pay for your school/college? How much have you invested overall? And, the most important, where are you right now with your business?
Thanks for sharing that and I think you put it well when you wrote…one of the most important aspects is allowing yourself to change your own mindset.
to answer your questions (even though meant as rhetorical)
Let me address 3 questions to your audience;
how much money did you pay for your school/college? LOTS!
How much have you invested overall? I spend tons of money each year on seminars, courses, continuing ed and not just in money but tons of time.
And, the most important, where are you right now with your business?
I am better off today than I am yesterday because I interview these guests and learn from them and then rewatch the interviews to see how I can improve.
As well as I feel like I know these guys, after going through last year’s foundation experience, I learned quite a few things about them that I didn’t know — like Andy didn’t feel very involved last year, or that Dane doesn’t like his mission, or what the heck Stanley Lee was up to (I’m ready to hire that guy myself!). Well worth the listen, thanks Jeremy!
Thanks for listening Geordie. Yes they were VERY open in this interview and express the thoughts a lot of us are thinking but never say.
In a way, this 1 aspect might be the best part about what Dane and Andy are doing. They’re certainly showing me the way to open transparency, and the benefits of leading a totally open life. So thanks for sharing this with me.
You are welcome Geordie.
Great interview guys.
As someone who really struggles with limiting beliefs — this interview was phenomenal.
Jeremy, your ability to get people to open up and be brutally honest is a true gift.
Keep ’em coming!
Hey Alex, thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate your kind words.
If you are open to sharing what limiting beliefs do you think you have?
It is hard to see it in ourselves sometimes so maybe a friend or spouse would shed some light.
Let me start..after watching my wife says one of my limiting beliefs is I need to work really long hours in order to be successful. (I agree with her that it is one of my limiting beliefs.)
what are yours?
I’m game — here’s 3 from wife:
– I don’t succeed or make it perfect the first time — I’ve screwed everything up.
– I’m a failure because I’m not on the same level as the people I admire.
– I’m not experienced enough or talented enough to be paid well.
And I can confirm — you do work insanely long hours : )
Wow, thanks Alex. Thanks Alex’s wife!
Great idea Alex for the idea to put the limiting beliefs here.
I can definitely relate to all of the ones you posted and #2 especially resonates with me ie #2 I am a failure because I am not on the same level as the people I admire.
That pit in my stomach when I see someone killing it online and I compare myself with them.
I will go through #2 above with the questions
Step 1 Is it true? (Yes or no. If no, move to 3.)—NO
Step 2 Can you absolutely know that it’s true? (Yes or no.)–SKIP
Step 3 How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought? I get a pit in my stomach and stress about how I can get further quicker and then think about all the other companies that are ahead of me and doing better.
Step 4 Who would you be without the thought? I would be more confident, I would focus on my ultimate vision and what I need to do to be the best me I can be. I give tons of value and know that I am grateful for where I am at.
PS Yes my wife would agree that I work insane hours..love it though 🙂
your intimate partner is definitely the best person to go to for those reflections. nice work. 🙂
Great interview Jeremy – I can see your growth since the first interview I saw you do. I have been impressed since the first month of the SRT (pre-foundation) with Danes authenticity. While I agree that what he teaches best is idea extraction, what he does best is create authentic relationships with people. That is why his SaaS customers love him as do people that spend time in his group.
Thanks Paul, I appreciate any feedback you have for me. I am always trying to get better.
What do you think it is that allows Dane to create authentic relationships with people?
Thank you for watching and for sharing your thoughts.
Hi Jeremy
likeability, giving and getting, self-disclosure
thanks Paul for sharing.
Awesome interview Jeremy! Loved listening into the super open discussion about limiting beliefs while running around the carnage of the floods in Boulder this morning. I was getting pretty emotional during part of Dane’s share. Thank you Dane and Andy for being so real and sharing so openly. So refreshing. And you too Jeremy, you ask great questions.
Highly recommend listening to this interview!
P.S. – Jeremy, have you considered posting your interviews to iTunes? Would be cool to be able to subscribe.
Hey Aaron! You are exactly right…Yes that is on my list to get on iTunes. I will let you know when it goes live. I have been so focused on getting great guests and interviews that iTunes needs to get done. Thanks for the kick in the pants
I recently published my podcast on iTunes. It was really simple with libsyn.com and didn’t take much time.
Aaron, thanks for sharing the resource. Is there a reason you went with libsyn instead of another route. what are other routes people use?
seems like the majority of big podcasters I see use it, that’s why I went with it. I don’t know the other routes…just know libsyn was simple and seems to do the job well.
Hey Aaron! how have you been? just was reading the comments and we have not chatted for awhile
Thanks Aaron, I got emotional also as I rewatched the interview reflecting on what they were saying and how it relates to me.
What part did you find most emotional for you in the interview?
Probably when Dane was discussing getting the kindness beat out of him in middle school, and then discovering that again later on as a core essence of who he is.
Yes, I related to that also. Middle school is such an awkward stage…at least for me 🙂
I just want to say holey crapbags! Yay! That was the best questioning and most open responses I have heard! I looooooooooooooove this interview!!! So often you hear interviews that are all “I love what I do”, “yes, it’s hard work, but I don’t mind”.. blah, blah, blah! Business is hard, it is up and down when you are starting up and your emotions go with that as you zero in and change things as you grow and understand what you do and don’t love that you have been doing. Loooove this freaking interview so much! Thank you, Jeremy, Dane & Andy. 🙂
love it. sign in next time so we know who to thank for the awesome comment.
good call Andy. They listened to you and Lisa signed in and posted above.
Yes, sorry about that. I was on my phone and didn’t realise I wasn’t signed in the first time. Oops. 🙂 Thanks Jeremy. 🙂
Sorry, I was on my phone! I signed in and re-sent above! Oops! Hehe. 🙂 Awesome interview! I love people who are real, and that was so real… Definitely more able to relate to these feelings, so thank you very much. Love it. 🙂

So often you hear interviews that where guests are all “I love what I
do”, “yes, it’s hard work, but I don’t mind”.. blah, blah, blah!
Business is hard, it is up and down and when you are starting up, your
emotions go with as you zero in and change things that work and don’t work. I often feel like “I f*@king hate …” and so then I change it, but that only comes as you grow and
understand what you have created and listen to your feelings about the parts of your business.
I freaking love how REAL this interview was and Jeremy, the questioning was probing, without being aggressive. Loooove
this freaking interview so much!
Thank you, Jeremy, Dane & Andy. 🙂
Hey Lisa! Thank you for your awesome comment!
I agree, these mental blocks, setbacks and challenges are not talked about enough. Many of the stories out there focus on the high points and that is great to hear also but we need to hear the real hard hitting stories about setbacks too.
I love how open they were and when I hear them talk about this stuff I think to myself, “I am not alone”.
Dane and Andy were great at opening up and often times it is difficult to be vulnerable and really cultivate that in others also it seems.
I agree Jeremy. More often than not people decide something and stick to it and it’s all high points. It’s a little bit of human nature “to protect ourselves” and to “look like things are great” but it certainly isn’t always like that, so I love that Dane and Andy opened up and yes, I too felt validated by being able to think “yes, I think that” or “I have felt like that”. I recently culled half of my services, which was scary, BUT I realised I didn’t want to do it any more, so I didn’t, much like Dane telling Andy he hated their mission… As I became more aware of my feeling to certain services, I too hated “my mission” and so, I changed it. Seriously, my favourite interview ever. I love the realness of it! 🙂
what services did you decide to keep and which did you cut? how did you decide which to keep?
I am sure a lot of people are going through similar thoughts in their head.
Hi Jeremy, well this was my service-based photography business and once I had had my cranky pants on for a few months, getting frustrated at exchanging time for money and missing my family,…and not enjoying parts, I just cut a. the parts that didn’t bring in much business and b. for me, newborns gave me no pleasure to photograph… Even thought they are absolute money makers, so one day I decided to stop. Took it off my website and when people ask/ed I had already spoken to another tog, so I send my newborn clients to her… AND the exciting news is, she has started sending me some of my “loved” work. With my online store business, I culled things that were logistically too difficult to continue stocking…. Much happier lady these days! 🙂
Hi Lisa,
That is great that once you started referring your newborn clients you got some of the “love” back. What IS your “loved” work?
Also where are you located in case someone on here is the same area and needs a photographer 🙂 and then they can contact you.
have a great day
It has been great. Law of Receiprocation, I guess. 🙂 My photog love is wedding and women’s boudoir. I also love outdoor families! 🙂 Idieally though I would be on stage giving speeches while travelling the world! 😉 Currently based in Orange, NSW AUStralia, but mostly photograph in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia and occassionally USA. You havea great day too Jeremy. 🙂
Thanks Lisa.
Best interview with Dane and Andy I’ve seen! So open and real. Jeremy’s a good listener. =)
Thank you Sheila for taking the time to comment!
I agree with you that they were so open and that made me feel comfortable to ask anything.
It seems like you are a very experienced listener of interviews (It sounds like you have watched a number of Dane and Andy interviews)…
who else would you like to see as a guest on the show that you admire?
Lol, I have,Jeremy. I’m a huge fan of the Foundation. I listen to the Starting from Nothing podcast and I pretty much hang on to the next ‘I’ve Made it’ video since they started the series.
I feel like Dane hasn’t been as open in other interviews – it’s like there’s a glimpse of the real Dane here, and it’s refreshing to see them both express their frustrations. Dane’s latest posts on the Fastlane forum have blown me away – it’s the most transparent the Foundation has been so far. I have renewed respect for what these guys do and what the Foundation stands for.
I am taking pointers from your interview style – you talk a lot LESS than they do. Listening perhaps made them want to open up more! Will keep that in mind for when I try Idea Extraction. (And when I talking in general. Lol)
As for who I’d like to see interviewed, Chris Guilleabeu comes to mind. I’m a huge fan of his. I also recently listened to a couple of inspiring podcasts on Entrepreneur on Fire, which are short and sweet (but powerful enough) so would love to hear them go into more detail:
– Vasavi Kumar (her dynamic personality really comes through)
– Courtney McKenzie (so positive, it’s contagious. I felt so cheered up after listening to her, lol)
– Minesh Bindi (this guy has an insane mindset!)
Hi Sheila, I am glad we got deeper in this interview for you.
What questions interest you for the people you mentioned?
What questions in general are you curious about so I see if I can weave them in. I am sure if you are interested in them then others will be also.
I am really curious what you are working on and who will you be targeting for idea extraction? maybe someone here is also in that business.
Thank you for your kind words about my interview style as often times I am not completely aware I am doing it until you point it out.
Also thank you for your suggestions and always let me know about any others you want to see.
I will put on my list to research and contact
Chris Guilleabeu
Vasavi Kumar
Courtney McKenzie
Minesh Bindi
you are awesome Sheila!
Hi Jeremy!
Wow, it would be awesome if they get interviewed. Well, what blew me away about them was their mindset and I am keenly interested in the psychological aspect of being an entrepreneur. Qs like:
– When did you know you overcame your personal challenges (or limiting beliefs)?
– What kind of challenges are you currently facing in your business? (similar to what Dane & Andy are talking about here)
– What habits did you need to change and develop?
– Whats your daily schedule/ regime look like or what does one day in your life look like? (This interests me, because I noticed from listening to podcasts and reading material from entrepreneurs, is that they seem to be very disciplined on a whole other level!)
Yes, there’s a bunch of us (with @lisarigoni:disqus )who have formed a secret fb group so we can support each other while we apply the practices of the Foundation. Some have already started Idea extraction and made cold calls. It’s pretty cool. =)
I’m targeting Engineers at the moment. I’ve sent out a small number of emails, but have taken a step back and have decided to get a better picture of what an engineer does during the day (I’ve worked with some of them before) and learn more about how to reach them so that I don’t waste my next lot of emails. Also zooming in on where they are locally (in Sydney).
And thanks for the link – will do next time! Thanks Jeremy
S
Hey Sheila!
Thanks for those questions as it really helps me make the interviews the best they can be and keep your needs and thoughts in mind as I am talking to the entrepreneurs. Thank you!
On another note…why did you decide to target engineers?
what are you working on?
Sydney is definitely on my list of places I want to go.
Hi Jeremy
well, I followed criteria set out by the Foundation when choosing an industry (as per Josh Isaak) plus I’ve worked for engineers before and figured I got on ok with them. Lol
I’m working on getting a list together for Idea extraction. Progress is slow at the moment, cause it’s manual (lots of copying and pasting into Excel) and life has been crazy busy (just moved apartments, and I’m flying to London on Sunday lol).
Yes Sydney is def worth a visit! If you fancy venturing to the Southern hemisphere one day. (we are too far away!) =)
That is a great post from Josh so thanks for sharing. Do you target specific types of engineers? It sounds like a very interesting niche.
Hi Jeremy!
Replying to you from the UK. What I had in mind was engineers who do maintenance on sites, cause I worked with maintenacne engineers and thought perhaps there’s potential there! However, when I started looking them up on yellowpages, I noticed that they don’t really categorise ‘maintenance’ cause they can cover across different disciplines of engineering. So it’s broad at the moment – mechanical, civil, structural, electrical. The ones who build and fix things, machines, existing sites, construction (forgive my ignorance, lol) – not so much biomedical, aerospace, or software. Lol! When I learn more about them, I may narrow it down further. For now, still working on my list! I’ve decided to use Engineers associations rather than yellowpages.
Thanks for sharing Sheila and when you have updates please share. Maybe someone reading this will have some ideas for you with engineers. Any engineers here? 🙂
Thanks Jeremy! =)
Also Sheila if you have any other suggestions of great guests you can submit them here>> http://www.inspiredinsider.com/suggest-an-interview/ I just submitted the ones below there so we make sure to check on them for you.
Thanks
agree – this was a really good interview. i didn’t even know you’d started this site jeremy. awesome stuff man.
Hey Chris!
Good to hear from you and thanks for watching. You know Dane and Andy well…what were your thoughts after the interview?
they’re incredibly genuine and not out to make you think they have it all together. it was cool to hear some of dane’s early limiting beliefs. AND i thought you were a great interviewer – really good questions.
Thanks Chris. Yes it is cool to hear how Dane and Andy progressed in their thinking. I shared below one of my limiting beliefs that I have. one of my limiting beliefs is I need to work really long hours in order to be successful. care to share one of yours? I would love to hear it.
This is absolutely freaking fantabulous! I got an awesome idea from this interview that is going to really help me achieve purpose locally and online…at that same dagum time!! Thanks all!
Thanks for watching Toni! Don’t keep us hanging…what is the idea? if you have to give some context on what business you have please do.
thanks!
I actually didn’t get to watch. My shockwave keeps crashing. 🙁 So, it’s in my ear. I’m about to listen to it again.
Anyway, I am a real estate business coach focusing on new agents. I’m entertaining the idea of building a local real estate team and fusing them with my online tribe for training and coaching purposes. I was just listening to how The Foundation interacts with their students and a light bulb came on. Laser coaching calls…who does that in real estate? My online group coaching and mentoring program…who does that in real estate? Applying the “mediapreneur” business model to active real estate practice so that I get REAL metrics…WHO FREAKING DOES THAT?
This chick!!! Watch me work…
Thanks for sharing Toni. You sharing gets my mind going even more.
Maybe some other people in real estate here can chime in with ideas for Toni or in general.
what is new and exciting with you Toni!? hope you are well
Hi Jeremy. Interesting that you “bumped” this comment. I’m launching a new membership community for solopreneurs. Like I’m opening the doors today.
I don’t work with real estate agents anymore, but going through the process of setting up our new membership site I’ve really been thinking about how a similar community would be great for new agents…affordable for newbies and extremely valuable. Weird that you should check in on THIS comment right now.
Awesome Toni! keep me posted and what will be in the membership? have a great day
Great Toni! what will you be teaching?
that is great! congrats and what is the result people should expect after joining? thanks for sharing Toni
Emotions buried alive is a great freakin book! I have a lot of respect for Dane because he’s one of the few entrepreneurs out there that get’s it on a mind-body-spirit-heart level, which is huge. They also go to burning man, they are doing all the right things! 🙂
Keep up the great work Jeremy!
Thanks David,
who is the author? I only saw the book Feelings Buried Alive never die. Is it the same author?
thanks for the comments and the book recommendation.
Karol Truman is the author.
Jeremy,
Thank you I am grateful for this interview. I have been following Dane and Andy for 4 weeks now. Every day I watch one of their videos or interview or spin-offs. I stopped the interview with Andy saying that being entrepreneur is a mirror of your beliefs. Every day I watch their tactics, stories and listen to their ways. But I can keep watching and listening for an eternity. It won’t get me anywhere.
I am bloody terrified, I am afraid of asking my friends to interview them and experience the idea extraction part. I don’t want to waste their time or bother them. I am afraid that they wont understand the purpose of the talk. It has been 2 months since my last startup where we did anything but reverser engineering. The accelerator program convinced us to build a product before any validation. And then I had a whole stack of self limiting beliefs How do I tackle these first?
Edouard! thank you for watching and being so open. It takes a lot of guts to face what we are terrified of.
If you would be open…Lets go through these steps right here with your limiting belief of not wanting to waste their time or bother them and being afraid they will not understand the purpose. answer these…
Belief:
Step 1 Is it true? (Yes or no. If no, move to 3.)
Step 2 Can you absolutely know that it’s true? (Yes or no.)
Step 3 How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?
Step 4 Who would you be without the thought?
Turn the thought around. Then find at least three specific, genuine examples of how each turnaround is true for you in this situation.
Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for you reply: All of a sudden I understand the concept of reaching out.
To go through the steps concerning my limiting belief on wasting time
Step 1 No
Step 3 I feel small and useless
Step 4 A guy with no fear
A. Limiting Belief: No Unique Ideas (still from the generation where u need to be the next zuckerberg, BS!)
Step 1 No
Step 3 I feel stupid
Step 4 A modern picasso spitting out ideas left and right or not, just listen to the world around you
B. Limiting Belief: Tomorrow I will be better prepared (read one more article or listen to another podcast today)
Step 1 No
Step 3 I know I am lying to myself
Step 4 A go getter, cant wait to get up and find out what the world has to say around me.
C. Limiting Belief: Fear to succeed (what if?!)
Step 1 Yes
Step 2 No (not sure) a natural inclination to believe that.
Step 3 I feel completely worthless thinking like that
Step 4 I deserve anything! I am nice and good person
Great exercise, this energizes
Regards
Edouard
WOW Edouard! THanks for sharing and being so open.
I have learned a lot from your post.
I really enjoyed what you wrote for your step 4’s and that guy sounds unstoppable. Read these allowed all together as it is powerful.
EX:
Step 4 A guy with no fear
Step 4 A modern picasso spitting out ideas left and right or not, just listen to the world around you
Step 4 A go getter, cant wait to get up and find out what the world has to say around me.
Step 4 I deserve anything! I am nice and good person
After step 4
find at least a few specific, genuine examples of how each turnaround is true for you in this situation.
EX:
Step 4 A guy with no fear
Real life example: (input your actual example) I remember when I went up to a business owner and asked him what is working best in his business. That resulted in a 30min conversation and he ended up hiring me for a big job. I had no fear when approaching a stranger.
Or something like that.
have a great day
I am starving for self belief!
see what I wrote to you below Edouard
Thanks for watching Edouard! what did you get out of the interview for yourself?
This stuff is pretty deep – “feel the complete ferocity and trauma of that moment”
The Alchemist by Paul Coelho – one of the best.
Learnt so much from this interview. Thank you guys – all 3
Hey Lee, thanks for watching and glad you liked it. It was an intense discussion. I agree…love the alchemist. Any other book favorites of yours that you care to share?
Love kids picture books with meaning – “Where the Wild Things Are” is a classic. Also bit of a Native American Indian freak – Black Elk Speaks – all the spiritual/nature wisdom. Listening again to Steig Larsson’s trilogy – just love how he took writing into the now with his characters and content
